What will happen on your site if the fire alarm actuates in the next few minutes?
Are you confident that your staff will know what to do? Will you be able to account
for everyone in the building? If the Fire and Rescue Service or Police attend what
will they need from you? How about SEPA, or the media?
Under the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 if you employ five or more people
then you must have a written emergency evacuation plan. This should be available
at all times to your employees and form part of their induction and training. Your
plan should give clear instructions on what action to take in the event of fire and
detail the procedures to ensure safe evacuation. In a small business this may take
the form of simple instructions on the fire action notice. In larger or complex
premises, or where there is a greater risk to life (less able people or persons asleep,
or potentially hazardous processes) you will need to create a more detailed emergency
plan.
It’s too late to consider this once the emergency is underway. Preparation is key
to resolving incidents however large or small, ensuring everyone remains safe and
getting back to business with the minimum of delay. We can help. From a simple
site survey with recommendations for procedures, to a full site emergency plan assessment
with staff and management training and testing of procedures by exercise. Let us
help to ensure that you are prepared.
